The Siege of Vicksburg, Its Approaches By Yazoo Pass and other routes

Rare broadside map of the Siege of Vicksburg, printed in Mobile, Alabama.

The map was drawn by T.S. Hardee, lithographed W.R. Robertson in Mobile, Alabama and published by S.H. Goetzel & Co.

The map shows the location of the Union and Confederate Armies and extensive explanatory notes, as well as locating towns, railroads, rivers and other features.

In the north, an extensive description on the rivers, geology and topography of the area is given, with a note that:

This renders it difficult for the enemy to make a land attack on any point we might fortify, and the streams are in most places so narrow that two Gunboats cannot lay abreast in them.

In the center, a note describes how the Union Army sought to take the Yazoo River by breaching a Levee on the Mississippi River at Moon Lake, but was repulsed at Fort Pemberton.

The final note describes a land expedition undertaken for the purpose of getting to the rear of Vicksburg.

The map is exceptionally rare. We note only a single example offered for sale by M&S Books ($4,750 in 1991 and again in 2000).
