Ortelius's Second Map of Italy
Decorative map of Italy from Ortelius' Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, the first modern Atlas of the World.
In 1584, Ortelius revised his map of Italy. The changes are primarily aesthetic, with more elaborate script lettering in the Adriatic and Mediterranean and a less scandalous example of Neptune and his female companion than the earlier edition, which showed them kissing.
Both maps are based upon the cartography of the Venetian mapmaker Giacomo Gastaldi.
