[Bering Land Bridge, Alaska] Teller-Kougarok Area Compliments of Lomen Commercial Company Nome, Alaska

Detailed map of the Teller-Kougarok area of the Seward Peninsula, the westernmost point of the mainland of Alaska, just across the Bering Straits from Russia.

The map is named for the town of Teller and the Kougarok River.

The map was a promotional item for the Lomen Company. Lomen Company was an American meatpacking company, founded in 1914 by brothers Carl and Alfred Lomen in the then Territory of Alaska. The company specialized in Reindeer.

The map identifies the City of Wales, Alaska, the westernmost city on the mainland of North America. In 1890, the American Missionary Association established a mission at the site of present-day Wales. In the 1890s, reindeer (domesticated caribou) were brought to the area and in 1894 a reindeer station was established. Wales became an important whaling center due to its location along whale migratory routes, and it was the region's largest and most prosperous village, with more than 500 residents.
