Rare separately issued map of the northwestern United States and British Columbia, issued in 1872 by A.L. Bancroft & Co. in San Francisco.

Bancroft's map was first issued by HH Bancroft in 1868. The map was drawn from a section of Bancroft's monumental map of the Pacific States, compiled by William H. Knight.

The map provides one of the finest large format treatments of any commercial map of the region published in the early 1870s, showing railroads and proposed railroad routes, counties, towns, lakes, rivers mountains, forts, Indian reservations and a host of other early details.

As noted by Rumsey:

This is the only edition of this map published by A.L. Bancroft. H.H. Bancroft published the first edition in 1868. The southern mate to this map was published in many more editions: 1868, 71, 73, 76 and 78. When comparing this edition to the original 1867 "mother" map, there are many changes in the eastern half of the map, especially the area around Yellowstone Lake, western Montana and eastern Idaho.

Wheat notes that the 1872 edition was the only edition he had seen on the market and indeed, this edition is extremely rare. We note that no examples of this map have been offered at auction or in dealer catalogs for nearly 30 years.
