Belize's borders have long been an issue for the country and its neighbors. The Belize-Mexico and Belize-Guatemala borders run through very difficult terrain, which made surveying them problematic. Consequently, the border with Mexico remained a disputed matter until the late 19th century, and the border with Guatemala is still contested today. The modern Mexico-Belize border was finally decided in 1893, with an official treaty signed in Mexico City. A further convention was concluded on April 7, 1897.

One of Mexico's main concerns about Belize revolved around arms smuggling between Belizean Maya to their compatriots in Mexico during the Yucatan Caste War.
