(William Howe) The Honble. Sr. Wm. Howe. Knigt of the Bath & Comander in Chief of his Majesty's Forces in America

Finely executed mezzotint portrait of Sir William Howe, commanding officer of the British Forces during the American Revolution.

An attractive mezzotint portrait of Howe, executed while he was serving as commander of the British forces in America from 1775 to 1778. Howe is shown in a half-length standing pose, wearing the star and sash of the Order of the Bath.

Prepared to fill the demand in Britain for portraits of war heros, the image bears little resemblance to Howe, and there is no record of Howe sitting for a portrait by a Charles Corbutt, which was also a pseudonym used by a Dublin-born engraver named Richard Purcell.

CRESSWELL, pp.40-41 (ref). ANB 11, p.345.
