Fine example of the Cornelis De Bruyn map of the Indian Ocean, showing his route from Gamron (modern Bandar Abas) to Batavia (Jakarta).
The map shows India and Indochina, including Sumatra and Thailand (Siam). The cities of Bombay and Calcutta are identified along with many others.
De Bruyn, a Dutch artist, made a remarkable journey to Moscow, Persia and the East Indies in 1701, at the age of 50. He spent most of 1703-04 in Persia and then traveled to Java in 1706. The map appeared in his Voyages Par Le Muscovie, En Perse, Et Aux Indes Orientales, published in 1718.
Cornelis de Bruyn , 1652-c.1726 was a Dutch portrait painter and traveler.
De Bruyn painted for some years in Italy, where he was known, in Rome, as Adonis. Bruyn is remembered chiefly for the records of his extensive travels in Egypt, Persia, India, and other countries, illustrated with his own designs.
