The last or nearly-last Dutch whaling voyage to the Arctic was an ill-fated venture through Davis Strait in 1826 by Harlingen, commanded by Klaas Hoekstra and owned and dispatched by the Greenland and Davis Strait Fishery Society, a local group in Harlingen. Hoekstra tried to take his ship north along the dangerous coast of Melville Bight, but Harlingen was caught in the ice and sank within a few minutes during a gale on August 23, 1826. Captain and crew were taken aboard by Captain Duncan of the London whaler Dundee. They reached a Danish settlement on the West Greenland coast where Dundee remained beset in the ice for eight months. On his return to Harlingen, Hoekstra wrote an account of his expedition accompanied by this map.
