The Panama American Land and Lumber Company was formed to acquire 70,000 acres of hardwood forests in central Panama, south of the Gulf of San Blas. Its primary agent, John Reton of Stevens Point, Wisconsin, traveled to Panama for 5 months in 1909. By 1910, the The Timberman reported that the Panama American Land & Lumber Co. was one of two companies which were actively working in the region and building sawmills.
