Riders started at the "Futuroscope" theme park near Poitiers before making their way through Nantes, the Mont-Saint-Michel, Geneva, L'Alpe d'Huez, Le Puy en Velay, Lourdes, Bordeaux, and Limoges before arriving at the Champs-Elysees.

This was a relatively flat edition of the race which took a rare clockwise tour around the country. This was the first race to feature Eastern Bloc participants, with several riders from those countries winning stages. Early stages featured sheep farmer protests common in 1990s France, with trees cut to block the roads. LeMond managed to take control of yellow jersey in the 20th stage of the Tour, clinching his third and final victory.

Printed slots on the map are left blank so that viewers can record overall champions and the winners of each stage. This map was produced jointly by the electronics company Toshiba, who had recently taken over La Vie Claire's team, and the cycling journal Miroir du Cyclisme. Toshiba's racers are pictured on the map.
