Finely executed mezzotint portrait of Esek Hopkins, the first person to serve as commander of the American Navy, during the American Revolution.
The portrait was engraved and offered for sale in London. London publisher Thomas Hart, issued a series of mezzotints of 'revolutionary rebels', most of which were copied and distributed in Europe with alternate titles.
Commodore Esek Hopkins (April 26, 1718 – February 26, 1802) was the only Commander in Chief of the Continental Navy during the American Revolutionary War. He was also an accomplished merchant captain and privateer.
